Monthly Free Games (June 2016)

Man, this never happens. People who only own an XBox One, this is your month to shine! Unless you really like basketball.

Costume Quest 2 (Xbox One)

This is basically a Paper Mario style cartoony RPG from Double Fine - I didn't play the original as much as I wanted to, and the new one has a much friendlier art style and perspective. Probably the one I'll go back to the most after Goat Simulator.

Goat Simulator (Xbox One)

Doom (PS4)

So, I'm about halfway through the campaign, and the new Doom isn't perfect. But it's the shooter we need, even when it's not always the shooter we want.

Doom 3 was an attempt to take the very old-school Doom formula and translate it to a Gears of War world full of grim darkness and serious story and did I mention darkness because darkness. It had it's moments, but it didn't feel like Doom. Doom isn't scary, Doom is glorious and goofy.

WIDIOW: Rock Band 4 Redux

The last couple of weeks have been very hectic, for various reasons. And I'm gonna cover the relevant ones in a few posts under the What I Did Instead Of Writing banner.

I also got back into Rock Band 4. Like, get all new instruments back into it.

I've been playing Rock Band 4 with some old Guitar Hero XBox 360 guitars, the XBox One controller adapter, and a set of Rock Band 1 drums with a broken foot pedal. So mostly not drums. Why? I'm a clicky guitar guy. Or at least, I was.

Monthly Free Games (May 2016)

A mixed bag this month. Some games seemed promising, but were disappointing. And some games are potentially fine examples of genres I cannot stand. A lot of deleting this month.

Defense Grid 2 (Xbox One)

Monthly Free Games (April)

Just getting this in under the wire. There were a lot of games this month, plus a late start for PS Plus, plus they did put out a new Ratchet and Clank game this week and having to stop doing that to poke at some Telltale quick-time-event bullshit was not easy.

The Wolf Among Us (XBox One)

It's a Telltale game set in the Fables universe. Do you like Fables enough to navigate clever dialogue trees with vague future implications and clunky-as-fuck quick time events for action scenes? If so, you probably already own this.

Dead Space (XBox 360)

Monthly Free Games (Mar 2016)

Not a great month for freebies. But at least there are a few odd niche titles that might appeal to people who may have missed them. And one new indie-style game on the PS4.

Styx: Master of Shadows (Xbox One)

This is the mediocre stealth game that was free on PS4 a few months back.

Gears of War 2 (XBox 360)

I'm pretty sure Gears of War 3 is now the only Gears of War game that hasn't been free at some point. Anyway, it's Gears of War. Brown dudes in brown armor taking cover behind gray waist-high ledges to shoot brown aliens.

Monthly Free Games (Feb 2016)

Not only did I play all the new games this month in the first week after they came out, I played them PLUS tried Gravity Rush Remastered and Crypt of the Necrodancer, both of which I paid real moneys for on my PS4. Better month than January, but still a fair share of duds.

ZHeros (XBox One

Sparse, pointless brawler with generic cartoony graphics, weird camera choices, and an unnecessarily complicated combo system. I can't imagine this being worth anyone's time.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution (XBox 360)

Monthly Free Games (Jan 2016)

It's a new year, and a lot of new disappointment. There's a minor ramaster of a brilliant but dated adventure game in here, a good stealth game if you like that kind of thing, and a fantasy RPG that is well regardec but also pretty old. And then a bunch of crap.

Sacred 3 (XBox 360)

Hot on the heels of last month's Van Helsing is Sacred 3, another mediocre action-RPG, this time with a very odd tone, with weird jokes interrupting an otherwise straight-up epic fantasy. Anyway, this is absolutely nothing special in any way.

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising (XBox 360)

Monthly Free Games - December 2015

Six days in, woo. Gonna try something a little bit different this month - the games are listed in a sort of rough best to worst, based mostly on how much I liked them but a little bit on how much I think society at large might like them, hence the somewhat high rankings for SSX and Freedom Wars. For me, the only one I'm even likely to play with any regularity is Gauntlet.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon (PS3)

Weekly Free Games: October 2015

October is a banner month for free games, and also a banner month for paid games. I need to get this up quickly because some of these XBox games expire on the 15th, but a combination of better than usual freebies, longer than usual freebies, and Rock Band 4 have made this take a very long time.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition (XBox One)
