Weekly Wrassslin' Wroundup (Aug 3-6)

With Ultima Lucha on the books, and Lucha Underground going dark until sometime between October and January (assuming the guy behind it is right that the chances of a Season 2 are 99.9%), the Weekly Wrasslin' Wroundup will be limited to just WWE unless I get so desperate I start watching Ring of Honor again.

So, with the runup to Summerslam, where do our feuds and stories stand?

SETH ROLLINS VS. JOHN CENA

@midnight Power Rankings (Aug 3-6)

I don't know if there was a deliberate attempt to load up this week's @midnight's with top comedy talent to take advantage of the added attention to the network from Jon Stewart's final week, but if that was the plan, then mission accomplished. This was a damn fine week of shows.

Ultima Lucha

Many will say that the most important finale of the week was Jon Stewart's exit from The Daily Show on Thursday. But while I was watching that Thursday night, I was wearing my recently-acquired Lucha Underground t-shirt in celebration of the greatest finale of all time, ULTIMA LUCHA.

Lucha Underground's finale was everything that made Lucha Underground great. It wrapped up stories, started new stories, and was chock-full of first-rate in-ring action.

@Midnight Power Rankings (July 27-30)

Sorry for the delay on this - I've been having shall we say time management issues. But it isn't that big a deal because really, all of last week was pretty damn good The biggest surprise this week was Jesse Joyce, who's been OK but not a standout on previous appearances, but really was firing on all cylinders. I mean, yeah, technically, he got beat out by Kurt Braunholer, but that's nothing to be ashamed of. Suzi Barrett also really hit hard on an otherwise lackluster Thursday show.

Weekly Wrasslin' Wroundup (July 27-30)

Battleground is on the books as one of the most disappointing PPV's of the year, and the week following it in WWE programming is basically saying that either WWE doesn't know what it's Summerslam plans are beyond Brock-Taker, or they know and aren't going to tell us. And there's only three hours of Lucha Underground left before the wait for Season 2 begins.

LUCHA UNDERGROUND IS STILL AWESOME

ULTIMA LUCHA HAS BEGUN.

@midnight Power Rankings

@midnight comes back from a couple of weeks off with a fairly weak set of shows. Riki Lindholme walks away with the week's MVP, with special bonus points to Ashley Williams for a strong performance in the second half of an otherwise lackluster Jim Gaffigan Show ep on Wednesday. Also, that thing Matt Besser does every time he's on the show continues to almost, but not quite, work.

Individual Rankings:

Riki Lindholme (M)
Jason Ritter (M)
Michael Ian Black (M)
Alice Wetterlund (T)
Hari Kondabolu (T)
Ashley Williams (W)
Horatio Sanz (Th)
Jerry Minor (Th)
Randall Park (T)

Ant-Man

So. Ant-Man.

The thing about Ant-Man is that it gets judget at least three ways. As a movie, as a superhero movie, and as a Marvel movie, and all three give you different results.

It fares best as a superhero movie. It's way better than Green Lantern or Man of Steel, more comfortable than X-Men First Class, less convoluted than Days of Future Past, better looking and better action than The Wolverine, and way, way smarter than the Garfield Spider-Mans.

Weekly Wrasslin' Wroundup (July 13-17)

One week from Battleground, and the WWE has one, count it, one match that I'm even remotely interested in. All other matches pale by comparison. Kevin Owens, and to a lesser extent, John Cena, is making the rest of the roster dull by comparison and also dull because of a bunch of shitty booking.
