Weekly Wrasslin' Wroundup (Sept. 7-10)

Energy is everything in pro wrestling. Whether it's narrative energy or in-ring energy, keeping the energy up is key to an entertaining program. WWE and NXT are both having serious energy shortages on the way to Night of Champions and the October NXT Takeover.

@midnight Power Rankings (Sept. 8-10)

And we're back! A short week post-LaborAnd Day, in the old Daily Show time slot which doesn't really matter because, well, DVR. And they made it easy this week, with three good shows that started great and got a little bit less great each day. So that made the individual rankings really easy to put in order.

1. Paul F. Tompkins (T)
2. Andrea Savage (T)
3. James Urbaniak (T)
4. Kyle Dunnegan (W)
5. Hari Kondabolu (W)
6. Matt Braunger (W)
7. Paul Scheer (Th)
8, Jon Lajoie (Th)
9. Steve Ranazzisi (Th)

Apple's 9/9 Event

Apple spent two and a half hours talking at us today, and the biggest shock was that half an hour of that wasn't talking about new Apple Stores in far-flung corners of the world. The last half hour was some band I don't care about, but how much did I care about the rest of it? The rundowin, in order of increasing apathy:

The Free Games Of September

September was the month I got truly and fully irritated with downloadable 2D action-adventure games and art games in general, with one exception. I joke a lot about games that basically take Super Mario Bros., recolor it in grey and black, and add some sparse piano music and a loss of childhood innocence and call it a day, but the point is, stop writing poetry in your Trapper Keeper until you've locked down some gameplay that doesn't drive the audience, a.k.a. me, up the fucking wall. And that goes double for your retro pixel art graph paper.

Weekly Wrasslin' Wroundup (Summerslam Weekend - Present)

I skipped a week on the Wroundup because there was simultaneously too much to write about and not enough to write about. Because for all the content WWE produced over Summerslam weekend and the following week on Raw and Smackdown, very little actually changed. Summerslam itself essentially settled nothing and changed nothing. Sure, Seth Rollins is now the US Champ, but only for a month. Everyone knows it's only for a month. The upside is, I get to use almost all my rivalry headers over again.

Tomatocalypse 2015

You may have noticed lighter-than-usual posting the past couple of weeks. That's partly because a lot of my regular subject matter is on break, but it's also because the annual Tomatocalypse was nigh.

@midnight Power Rankings (Aug 17-20)

Oh, swet Jebus. If you're gonna go on a twoo week hiatus, go out with a show like Thursday's, which was an all-time classic by any standards. And it capped a perfectly decent week of solid episodes. But goddamn, Natasha Leggero knocked it out of the park with the joke of the... month at the very least with her Guy Fieri slam. Also, first-time guest Sam Morril did an amazing job, and made me really look forward to his impending episode of The Half Hour.

1. Natasha Leggero (Th)
2. Andy Daly (Th)
3. Sam Morril f(T)
4. Derek Waters (Th)
5. Lennon Parham (M)
6. Jessica St. Clair (M)

Weekly Wrasslin' Not Wroundup (Aug 17-20)

Very little happened on the shows this week, and I haven't even had time to watch Smackdown. NXT featured a record EIGHT opponents already in the ring in a one hour show. Raw featured the return of Dolph Ziggler and that's about it. So instead of a Wroundup, let me get my predictions in for the two huge shows this weekend, starting with NXT Takeover: Brooklyn

Apollo Crews vs. Tye Dillinger

@midnight Power Rankings (Aug 10-13

Another VERY good week for @midnight. You may notice Michelle Buteau at the top of this week's rankings. You may watch the show and wonder why that is. Well, you see, the ratings are capricious and arbitrary. I thought she got robbed by being knocked out first. It's part of a mildly troubling anecdotal pattern I've been seing of non-white-non-dudes getting the red light a LOT. At least the ones who aren't Ron Funches. Plus, I'm kind of folding her appearance on Denzel Washington Is The Greatest Actor Of All Time, Period into this because, well, I can.

Weekly Wrasslin' Wroundup (Aug 10-13)

Next weekend's a big one for WWE. On Saturday we have the NXT show, before their biggest ever crowd in Brooklyn. And the next night is the four-hour Summerslam. Needless to say, the first show is way more interesting. But we'll start with the main roster stuff.
