Weekly Wrassslin' Wroundup (Aug 3-6)

With Ultima Lucha on the books, and Lucha Underground going dark until sometime between October and January (assuming the guy behind it is right that the chances of a Season 2 are 99.9%), the Weekly Wrasslin' Wroundup will be limited to just WWE unless I get so desperate I start watching Ring of Honor again.

So, with the runup to Summerslam, where do our feuds and stories stand?

SETH ROLLINS VS. JOHN CENA

The good news is, this week brought some clarity to the plans for matches at Summerslam. The news on what those matches are, on the other hand, are a bit of a mixed bag. Rollins vs. Cena, Title vs. Title, is... a problem. Because if Rollins wins, he holds two belts and will continue to feud with Cena until Cena gets one or both of them back, because Cena. And if Cena wins, well, Cena wins. And Summerslam isn't the place for bullshit shenanigans finishes. I appreciate them making the most out of Cena's broken nose, though. Taking advantage of stuff like that is where WWE excels. Plus we got Rollins Vs. Neville out of it on Raw, and that was huge fun.

BROCK LESNAR VS. UNDERTAKER

Paul Heyman cut another long, apocalyptic promo on Raw while Brock Lesnar stood silently on some of the ring steps in the middle of the ring. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. In fact, if I could have Paul Heyman talking for however long the Brock Taker match would have lasted at Summerslam instead of the match, I'd be much happier.

KEVIN OWENS VS. CESARO

They're building this competently and the match is going to be great, but there's no real story or rivalry hear beyond a bit of a philosophical clash based on qualities (Owens' propensity to abandon matches, Cesaro's respect for the business) largely introduced just for this feud. They're both treading water, but at least it'll keep them from sinking.

PRIME TIME PLAYERS VS. NEW DAY VS. PROBABLY LOS MATADORES AND LUCHA DRAGONS OR MAYBE THE ASCENSION FOR SOME REASON?<

Hey, look. A multi-team tag match on Raw with the PTP on commentary. Yay. At least Smackdown returned to All Three New Days vs. Prime Time Players And Third Guy, but the new third guy was Mark Henry, so fuck that.

ROMAN REIGNS AND DEAN AMBROSE VS. BRAY WYATT AND LUKE HARPER

This keeps going and nobody cares. They were the main event on Raw, paired with the other feud nobody cares about, Randy Orton and Sheamus, and it was a yawner. Reigns pinned Rusev on Smackdown while we wait for Rusev's story to evolve or resolve.

THE DIVAS REVOLUTION CONTINUES

The three three-Diva factions continue to mix it up in a couple of matches each show, with decent wrestling. No real story progression yet, or a clear picture of what title match this'll lead to, but I'd bet money on a Charlotte / Banks / Nikki Triple Threat at Summerslam with the title moving to Charlotte.

NEVILLE VS. STARDUST

Neville was busy with his World Heavyweight Title open challenge match with Seth Rollins on Raw, so this is all on hold until Arrow's Stephen Amell gets involved this coming Monday.

And the NXT Roster Feuds/Stories:

BAYLEY VS. THE NXT WOMEN'S TITLE

Bayley got her decisive win over Charlotte this week, and that earned her a #1 Contender's match against Becky Lynch, so it looks like all three additions to the main roster will be putting Bayley over on their way out the door. And I'm completely fine with that.

KEVIN OWENS VS. FINN BALOR

Interviews revealed that Kevin Owens wants a ladder match so that William Regal can't screw him, and Finn Balor is fine with that, so a ladder match at Takeover it is.

THE VAUDEVILLAINS VS. BLAKE AND MURPHY

The rematch is official for Takeover, but Regal's suggestion that the VV's find a way to counter Alexa Bliss that won't involve a violation of chivalry makes me hope for a female Vaudevillain. And it makes me want it to be Ol' Blue Pants. It better not be Eva Marie.

TYLER BREEZE VS. JUSHIN "THUNDER" LIGER

This match is now official, pinned to some vague story about Breeze asking for competition and getting more than he bargained for. Apparently he bargained for less than a 50-year-old Japanese cruiserweight legend.

OTHER WEIRD BULLSHIT

Baron Corbin squashed another jobber instantly because they don't know what to do with him. Dash and Dawson's elevation to tag team seriousness last week led to them losing, then beating up, the execrable Hype Bros. this week. Samoa Joe beat Rhyno because everyone has to eventually. And Fat Comedy Slob Bull Dempsey is hitting the gym for real now and is triumphing in a triumph of the human spi... who gives a fuck?
